VISITORS Seneschalstown failed to make the most of the advantage of the strong breeze as they suffered a second defeat in Division 1 of the A League.

The Ashbourne men made a lightning start to proceedings with points from Andrew Tormey and Thomas McGovern, before Paul Gilligan found the net inside 10 minutes. Bryan Clarke eventually got Seneschalstown off the mark after a cheeky lob from debutant Cathal Finnegan rebounded off the crossbar.

Finnegan notched two points in that opening half, but at the break it was the hosts who led 1-4 to 0-5.

The sides exchanged scores at the start of the second half, with Finnegan on target for Seneschalstown. However, Ashbourne took a grip on proceedings and five successive scores left them firmly in the driving seat.

Finnegan eventually brought his tally of points to five, but Ashbourne made certain of victory with late scores from Ciaran Ellis, Sean Curran, Kevin Fenton and Thomas McGovern.

Best for the Yellow Furze outfit were Adam Carey, Jonathan Gilsenan and Cathal Finnegan. •Rathkenny are finding life difficult in the top grade and they suffered another heavy defeat when going down at home to Dunboyne 4-11 to 0-5.

The hosts, who were without inter-county star Donal Keogan, had the advantage of the strong breeze in the first half but found themselves a point in arrears at the break, Dunboyne ahead 0-5 to 0-4.

Rathkenny drew level shortly after the restart, but they failed to score again after that as Dunboyne took control of matters and rattled in four goals to record an easy win.
