THE Cuchulainn Gaels / St.Pats ladies team got their league campaign off to a winning start with a hard fought 4-8 to 2-6 victory over Glyde Rangers in windy conditions in Lordship.

Both sides traded early scores however it was the home team who opened up an early lead with Aisling O’Doherty adding two quick fire points to lead by two.

Catherine O’Connor palmed a high ball in into the back of the net to open up a five-point lead in the first 10 minutes.

Glyde Rangers, however, soon got into the game and scored two points in the next five minutes and were unlucky not to have racked up more with numerous goal chances missed.

However they soon got their goal in the 17th minute to leave the sides level.

Aine Breen added a point to put the Pats/Cuchulainn Gaels back ahead. Glyde were then awarded a penalty which gave them the lead for the first time in the match after 22 minutes.

Glyde added a further point just before the break to give them a 2-4 to 1-4 lead.

St.Pats/Cu Gaels had an early chance in the opening minutes of the 2nd half however the shot came back off the crossbar and Glyde defended well to avoid any further chance. It was Glyde who then opened the scoring in the second half with a point from a free after five minutes.

However the peninsula combination were dominating possession and were unlucky not to get a second goal with a Catherine O’Connor shot well saved by the goalkeeper. She did, however, add a point a minute later to reduce the gap but Glyde once again responded to leave four between the sides.

Meg Woods who played well in midfield throughout, made a bursting run through the midfield and powered a shot into the back of the net to give the Pats a much-needed lift. The Pats then dominated the final 10 minutes with Catherine O’Connor adding two further goals and points from Meg Woods and Claire Savage left the final score, 4-8 to 2-6.
