Angry McEntee claims team aren’t working hard enough
hugely frustrating which I don’t understand. Then we show something and get back into the game and we show a great bit of guts and we show a great bit of heart and we start winning the battles and we get the goal and are a point down with 12 minutes to go.
‘That is when we should have started winning the game. ingWe had for everythingng ourselves gogoves and that is thehe period that really - frustratedd me. There is only one winner in the game and then wee start playing foror ourselves again.in. We started takingking shots from ridiculousculous angles. There were lads taking shots withith the ooutsidetside of their foot, from areas that we were never going to score from.
‘We allowed Cork a foothold back in the game and in the end we were lucky to get something out of it, so frustration is the overriding emotion that I am feeling at the moment.’ McEntee was quick to dismiss suggestions that inexperience has something to do with it. ‘No, I’m not buying that, I don’t agree with that at all. Some of the gguysy that made some of the worst decisions ouout there were some of our more experienced perienexperienced players. ‘TThey have all playplayed loads of foofootball, they hahave all played at a competitive tivcompetitive level, they all know what is the right thing to do at the right time of the ggame. We just didn’t do it. ‘We were mmaking token runs,ns wee weren’teen’t mamaking genuine runs that would ask questions of the Cork defence. We stood off them, we allowed them to come at us and then we resorted to some needless fouling, some harmless enough ones too at times, but we knew if Colm O’Neill is out there and you give him a free he is going to score it. There was no reason to be giving away frees out there. I was really disappointed with our first-half performance.
‘The lads have just got to work harder. They just can’t show up one day and not show up the next, or show up one half and not the next. That is not the way the game goes. You have got to play every second of every minute.
‘That is something we have got to get used to. That is not a physical thing - that is an attitude. It is a weakness that we have and unless we keep working and working we are in trouble. If we don’t work hard enough we are at best average. If we work hard enough we can compete with a lot of teams.
‘This has got to come deep down from the players themselves. Lads have got to decide they either want it or they don’t. If you want it badly enough you work hard at it. It’s make your mind up time for a lot of guys.’ MEATH County Board will have to decide the fate of the Tailteann Cup semi-final between Drumconrath and Slane, which failed to materialise on St Patrick’s Day.
The tie was scheduled for Castletown but was called off at short notice and it is understood that Drumconrath were informed not to travel to the venue as Slane wouldn’t be fulfilling the fixture.
