Boys get no joy beside the seaside

DROGHEDA Boys U-15s suffered heartbreak in the seaside town of Portmarnock on a crisp, sunny Saturday morning as the hosts fought back to take all three points.

The Boynesiders looked sharp at the start, with midfield trio Alan Beattie, Sam Victory and Aaron Smith imposing themselves on the game from the outset.

And the game was only four minutes old when a clearance from goalkeeper Jonathon Clear went out to Taju Adigun on the right wing. He skipped past the left full-back to send in a low cross for the incoming Frank McClean to convert to the net.

Drogheda continued to control the game and were getting in behind the Portmarnock defence, only to be denied by the goalkeeper on two occasions.

However, on 17 minutes a failure to properly clear their lines saw the ball break to Portmarnock and they played it through to their forward to level the score.

Despite this goal against the run play Drogheda pushed on and were controlling the midfield and attacking constantly, but Portmarnock were defending stoutly with their backs to the wall and efforts from Aaron Smith, Alan Beattie and Peter Meegan were rebuffed.

How Drogheda were not in front was a mystery Agatha Christie would be proud of!

But on 47 minutes Portmarnock played the ball quickly through the middle and broke into the penalty area to round the keeper for the lead goal - 2-1.

Drogheda did not let their heads drop and they pressed on. A free kick by Aaron Smith from 25 yards saw a touch from the onrushing Drogheda attack go narrowly wide.

In the last 10 minutes the Boynesiders peppered the Portmarnock penalty box, but it was one of those days where Portmarnock’s goal led a charmed life and Drogheda weren’t rewarded for their efforts. THE Drogheda Children’s League are exploring the idea of running with an Under-15 League next season and are asking clubs to inform them by email as soon as possible if they are interested.
