Remember Private Halpin from Killary this summer

-

AT a recent meeting of the municipal district council in Duleek, Lobinstown man Cllr Paddy Meade made a call for the 14 men who perished during WWI to be honoured in some way before the end of the commemorations in 2018.

Ironic then, that a son of that part of Meath will be recalled shortly.

Private J Halpin was a member of the Royal Irish Regiment and he died on June 7, 1917 - almost 100 years ago.

His grave is marked and he rests in Wytschaete Military Cemetery, located 7 Kms south of Ieper ( Ypres) town centre on the road to Armentieres.

In July, the ONE and members of Meath CC will take part in the anniversary event for Slane Poet Francis Ledwidge at his graveside in Ypres.

Hopefully, a delegation will head down the road a little bit and remember Private Halpin too, a son of John and Anne Halpin, of Killary, Lobinstown, Slane. It would be fitting.

Cllr Meade says that a plaque will be erected in memory of the 14 men in Lobonstown and a group are hoping to visit the places in which they fell in battle.
