Rovers maintain perfect start at Grove

HUNTERSTOWN ROVERS O’CONNELLS 2-18 0-11

-

HUNTERSTOWN left the Grove on Friday evening with their unbeaten start to the league intact after a 13 point victory over O’Connells.

The visitors were out of the blocks quickly and scored three points from Brendan Lennon, Ryan Burns and David Finn in the first five minutes.

The home team responded with the next two points both frees from Conor Culligan and Niall Conlon and had they taken their chances could have had a few more points on the score board.

However a point from Alan Landy was followed a minute later by a goal after Burns received the ball along the sideline and cut inside his man and around another defender and fired a low shot that beat the keeper at the near post. The same player landed the next point and another good move from the visitors saw a Landy hand pass to the on running Finn and he placed his shot to the top corner of the net to leave the score 2-5 to 0-2 after 20 minutes.

The sides shared the next two points and Landy and Padraig Matthews increased Rovers lead to 11. A Conlon free and a point from Tony McKenna were the last scores of the half to leave the score at the break 2-9 to 0-4.

The teams traded points at the start of the second half Culligan and Paul McKeever for the home side and a brace from Landy for Rovers. McKeever and Dean Stanfield reduced the margin but points from Lennon and Landy returned the status quo.

The Bellingham team to their credit did not give up and the sides shared the next six points to make it 2-16 to 0-11 on the scoreboard. Finn and Landy finished the scoring on the night as Rovers maintained their unbeaten start to the league and the top of the table.
