St Fechin’s too strong for Roche

ST FECHIN’S Ladies continued their strong start to the Division 1 League with a 17-point victory over Roche Emmets on Sunday morning in wet and windy conditions.

St Fechins, with home advantage, took the lead early with Hazel Haughney hitting the back of the net to put the first score on the board. Roche fought back, bringing the ball rapidly down the field. Under intense pressure, Fechins ‘keeper Caoimhe McQuillan made an effortless save.

After a quick kick out to Sara Moore, the ball was off loaded to Roisin Kavanagh who carried it down the field at an incredible pace, when she was shut down by the Roche defence, Rebecca Howell was quickly by her side hungry for the ball, determined for glory she kicked a remarkable long distance point.

Roche struggled to break through the Fechins defence only scoring one point in the first half. Defenders Orla Brennan, Pamela Campbell and Céire Nolan dominated the Emmets attack. A second score from Hazel soon followed by a point from Catherine McGlew left the half time score at 3-5 to 0-1.

Louise McCullough opened the second half with a point followed by and exceptiona­l goal from Catherine McGlew. With the wind behind them Roche continued try to break through the locals defence, Jenny Mulrey and Orla McEvoy made super blocks and the hardworkin­g Sarah Sharkey broke down several offensive plays.

Roche managed to put a further two points up on the board but Rachel Kinch replied, managing to secure a point from a free and the eager Ellen Brodigan added another point to conclude the game. St Fechins Ladies left high spirited as they managed to secure another victory in an electrifyi­ng game.
