Ward takes singles title for Watters

-

PAT Ward of Watters in Collon came through with flying colours to win the Divisional Singles competition for players from Division 2 and 3 teams, held in Grennans of Drogheda.

In all, 37 players entered and there was a very high standard of play throughout. One thing that was highlighted, and it was good to see, was the number of very good new young players coming through. That bodes well for the future of darts in this area.

With four boards in operation it was not long before the tournament came down to the semi-finals, with Bob Hanratty (Hill Bar, Bellewstown) taking on Ward and David Andrews (Morning Star, Tullyallen) playing Jack Hoey (Thatch).

After two very close and exciting games, Ward and Andrews qualified to play in the decider, winning through by the narrowest of margins in both games.

A very good final then took place, with not much in it throughout, but Ward’s experience eventually played its part and after four very tight legs he claimed the title on a 3-1 scoreline.

League chairman Kevin Campbell, assisted by Ian Lowthe, Martin Russell, Pat O’Brien and Derek Caffrey, made the various presentations to the finalists and beaten semi-finalists.

This was the first event of its kind to take place in Grennans and it was a case of top marks to all concerned. The League thanked the management and staff concerned, and also members of the Grennans darts team who assisted in running the competition.
