Classy Albion enjoy double celebrations

-

HAVING beaten Drogheda Town six days earlier to secure the Premier title, Albion Black came from behind to beat a strong Termonfeckin team in the Under-13 Cup decider and complete a famous double.

There had been very little to separate these two teams throughout the season and this proved to be the case again in the final at United Park.

Termonfeckin came out of the blocks stronger and opened the scoring early with a nice move down the left wing which was calmly converted by Cillian McCormack.

This seemed to shake Albion into life, with Liam Gaffney, Diarmuid Cullen, Sean Connaughton and Kristian Nolan beginning to get a hold in midfield. The equaliser came before half-time when Liam Flynn played in a dangerous cross from the right wing and a Termonfeckin player was unlucky to put through his own net.

Albion began the second half the more assured, with their back four of Sean Brodigan, Ciaran Brannigan, Aaron Levins and Rhys Fordham repelling all Termonfeckin efforts.

The game really came to life when Ciaran McCartney found Liam Flynn on the edge of the box and Liam hit an outrageous volley from all of 20 yards to the top corner, a superb goal that would have graced any match.

Termonfeckin continued to apply pressure as they sought the equaliser, but Albion hit them on the break a number of times and were unlucky not to score a third, with Liam Osborne, Davidas Vilius and Eoghan McDonnell all going close to finding the net.

Niall Donoghue had an excellent game between the posts for Albion and was very calm and assured under a barrage of high balls in the closing 10 minutes, but this was truly a team performance by a strong Albion team who only lost one game all season.

Gus Flynn, the Albion manager, expressed his delight and pride with his players after the match, saying: ‘ We have been knocking on the door for the last few years and we added a number of players in the close season which strengthened the squad, giving us more options.

‘The guys’ commitment throughout the year was exceptional, they have kept their heads down and worked really hard and Karl and I are so proud of them.’
