Black Bull closing in on Premier spot

-

BLACK Bull will secure promotion to the Premier Division for the first time in their history if they win their penultimate match away to Square United tomorrow (Wednesday).

Ardee Celtic’s scoreless draw against OMP on Friday last, a result that saw the Meath side crowned Division 1 champions, combined with the Bull’s win against Johnstown the same night means that Pat Mohan’s charges still have two opportunities to clinch their place in the top flight.

The Drogheda side came out with all guns blazing against Johnstown and they could have been three goals ahead inside the first five minutes.

Evan Corlett missed an easy scoring opportunity and Kenny Hurley was denied by the opposition keeper before firing another opportunity wide of the upright.

Corlett, though, would soon make amends by scoring a firsthalf hat-trick and his first - in the 12th minute - was perhaps the best as he rounded the keeper before slotting the ball to the net from close to the corner flag.

Goals two and three were also of the highest quality as Corlett slipped by a couple of defenders and bore down on goal before producing a classy finish.

Johnstown did pull a goal back in the second half, but they never looked likely to deny Black Bull victory and the only downside to the night were the injuries suffered to strikers Corlett and Hurley.

Mohan will be hoping they recover in time to face Square United, where a win would see them overhaul Ardee Celtic who would then face Premier strugglers Boyne Harps in next week’s Premier/First Division play-off.
