Town look to take big step towards safety

DROGHEDA Town continue their pursuit of Major Division safety tonight (Tuesday) with the visit of Corduff to Marian Park (7.45pm) after going down to promotion-chasing Mid Sutton on Thursday last.

After an evenly contested opening quarter, Town hit the front after 22 minutes when the referee spotted a push on their forward Emmanuel Santos and Neil Donnelly stroked home the resulting penalty kick.

Mid Sutton were a threat from set pieces, particularly in the first period when they had a strong wind at their backs, but their equaliser came from open play right on the stroke of halftime.

A cross from the left held up in the wind and as the visitors’ defence and keeper hesitated, a Mid Sutton nipped in to score.

The hosts then went ahead straight after the interval from a quickly taken corner, with Ronan Brown helpless as one of the Mid Sutton players rifled an excellent shot to the net.

Drogheda had a number of set-play situations themselves, but their deliveries were disappointing, while they were unable to bring on fresh legs as their only substitute had come on at half-time because of an injury.

Manager Robbie Horgan threw centre-half Ciaran Cluskey Kelly into attack for the last 15 minutes in the hope of salvaging something from the game, but without success and two minutes from time Mid Sutton added a third goal to make sure of victory.

Town have four games remaining, starting tonight, and they still need two more wins to be absolutely sure of their Major Division status for another season.
