Dunleer AC hit the heights

DUNLEER AC’s juveniles had a great weekend of athletics, with the high jump, long jump, javelin, shot putt and hurdles on Friday night in the Lourdes stadium and the sprints, middle distance, turbo javelin and relays on Saturday and Sunday in Bush.

There were fantastic performanc­es across the board, with gold, silver and bronze medals going to the Dunleer AC juveniles in a range of events. Highlights were Liam Connaughto­n’s 52-metre championsh­ip best in the Javelin under 18/19, Emma Cheshire’s long jump win and championsh­ip best with a 5.38m jump under 18/19 and Erinn Leavy’s 1:47 600m under 12, earning her gold by a street.

Patrick Farrell enjoyed victory in the under 13 1500m, Victor Esosa won the under 15 1500m win, Karlis Kaugars took under 13 javelin gold, Aeyla Orr won both the long jump and high jump events and Grace Fitzpatric­k took gold in the 200m under 14.

Many silver and bronze medals were also won as these athletes prepare for the Leinster Club and Schools finals.

At the Irish Milers Club event on Saturday last Dunleer AC athlete Garry Campbell ran a personal best of 3:51.2 to win the 1500m, and having secured another PB for 3km of 8:21 the previous week he is on course for a great track season.

Dunleer ladies took some of the top spots in the Leinster 3km Road Race on Bank Holiday Monday in Gowran, Co Kilkenny.

Karen Costello finished second overall in a time of 10:48 (1st Over40) and her clubmate Nicola Welsh was fourth overall just one second behind and came first in the Over35 age group.

Jacqueline Matthews was sixth Over-45 and together the ladies brought home silver club medals and bronze county medals which was a great afternoon’s work.

Athletes from the Dunleer club also performed very well at the Boyne 10k, with Peter Ryan and Joan Neary prominent. Dunleer AC’s Boyne 10k results: Peter Ryan 47:51, Liam Healy 48:24, Joan Neary 49:43, Helen Cheshire 51:34, Sandra O’Rourke 53:40, Tommy Sheils 56:49, Iveta Kaugare 1:01:11.
