Homeopathic medicine is a natural form of medicine from which you can select remedies to treat everyday ailments. Or you can visit a homeopath for a one to one consultation where a perfect remedy is selected by the practitioner based on a number of questions and observations that they make.

Homeopathic medicine can help a wide variety of ailments including anxiety, allergies, asthma, digestive problems, fatigue, insomnia, skin diseases, and stress.

According to homeopath Elisabeth Cussen, each person is treated as a unique individual. Everything is taken into account: how the client feels, how they react to their symptoms, and how they behave. ‘Every little thing directs me to the perfect remedy for that client,’ says Elisabeth. ‘ Two people could present with the same problem – pain in the knee, for example – and leave with completely different remedies based on the information received.’

The client reports progress back to the practitioner and the remedy is changed as the symptoms change, helping them to get back to good health.

I like the fact that it’s generally safe with medication and can be taken by people of all ages.

Here are some homeopathic remedies that you could have in your cupboard:

Arnica is brilliant for bruising and recovery after operations. It’s also great given after concussion, Elisabeth told me.

Belladonna is the remedy that is used for a sore throat, throbbing headaches, and throbbing earache.

Nux Vom is the classic one to help with irritated digestion, nausea, and flatulence. A great hangover helper!

Phosphorus can help when suffering from a dry, tickling cough often worse after leaving, or entering a warm room.

Pulsatilla is a great remedy for children. It can help with middle ear infection developed after a cold, conjunctivitis and a common cold with a lot of discharge.

Ruta Grav is used to help recovery from sprained tendons.

These remedies are available from your local health store. They are easy to use; simply dissolve under your tongue. For an acute situation, the correct remedy should act very quickly.

You reduce the dosage as the symptoms improve. However, if you have on-going chronic conditions you will get the best remedy to suit you by having a one-to-one consultation with a homeopath. Your local health store may know someone that they can recommend to you.
