SCENT OF GARLIC

The Garlic Flowers have been cut at the end of the Stamullen Road at Gormanstown in the past week or so resulting in that very familiar scent of this wonderful wild flower.

Garlic grows in abundance in and around the former Viscount Preston Estate and Gormanstown Castle and was widely used in the past, as indeed it still is for both culinary and medicinal consumption. Many of the grandeur homes of the Georgian period purposely planted garlic across their estates and as a result it has spread further over the centuries.

Large amounts of garlic may also be seen in the last remaing section of the old Brae Wood at Stedalt which forms part of the former estate of Stedalt House and more of this beautiful flower may alsao be seen along the road in the vicinity of Dardistown Castle.

FLEXIBUS

It is great to see that more and more people appear to be using the new Flexibus/Local-Link Bus service from Stamullen Village to Balbriggan. The service runs seven days per week at various times throughout the day. A Flexibus service also runs to the town of Drogheda every Friday morning departing from Stamullen Village shortly after 8.30am and returning from outside St. Peters Church in West St. Drogheda shortly after 12.30pm.

YOUNG AT HEART BINGO

Kathleen Gough has asked me to inform all that the Young at Heart weekly bingo continues in Whytes of Stamullen every Thursday evening beginning at 9pm.

FRIENDS OF AUTISM & ADHD

A new shop for the Friends of Autism & ADHD is now open at the Millfield Shopping Centre in Balbriggan.

DAWN CHORUS

The birds awakening across Europe a couple of weeks ago with the name now familiar as the Dawn Chorus, which was another first for Ireland, RTE Radio and the Presenter Derek Mooney & Co. When out walking in the rural countryside at this time of the year, the noted Dawn Chorus can be heard throughout the whole day as young chicks and adult birds of every description whistle, sing and chirp among the hedgerows and woodlands yet it appears strange to me that so many people who are also out are to be seen wearing headphones! You do`nt know what you are missing: ditch the headphones and enjoy the countryside in all its wonderful glory of both sound and vision!
