Probe into pipebomb attack at Grennans
GARDAI BELIEVE INCIDENT MAY BE LINKED TO CAR FIRE THAT EVENING
GARDAÍ are investigating a pipebomb attack on Grennans Bar in Drogheda in the early hours of last Thursday morning.
The shocking incident happened at around 3am when the device was thrown at the door of the premises.
Thankfully, there were no casualties as a result of the attack but both the premises and a nearby car were damaged.
Grennans Bar on the Newfoundwell Road was cordoned off for a number of hours while the scene was technically examined.
A spokesperson for the gardaí said they are also investigating a separate incident in which a car was set fire on the Newfoundwell Road at around midnight and whether it is linked to the pipebomb attack at The Well pub.
‘We are looking into the possibility that the two are linked,’ said a garda spokesperson.
The car was taken away for technical examination following the fire.
Gardaí and emergency services including two ambulances, had earlier been called to the area to intervene in a serious row which had broken out.
It is believed at least one person was brought to hospital as a result of this incident.
The garda spokesperson confirmed a forensic examination had been carried out at the public house and door to door investigations also took place over the weekend.
He said the door of the pub has sustained minor damage, as had a vehicle that was parked close by.
The scene was sealed off for a number of hours but had reopened by 9am on Thursday morning.
Chairperson of the Drogheda Joint Policing Committee Kenneth Flood was condemned the pipe bomb attack on the pub.
Cllr Flood said: ‘It doesn’t matter that this happened at 3am when the pub was closed, this is still a mindless and outrageous act of violence.
‘I am asking that anyone at all with any information to call Drogheda Garda station on (041) 987 4200.
