Three robberies at Mellifont Abbey

GARDAI have warned those visiting Old Mellifont Abbey not to leave valuables of any kind in their cars after three cars were broken into in less than two weeks at the popular tourist spot.

A car belonging to Australian tourists was broken into on Friday, May 19th at around lunchtime.

The windows on the car, which had been rented for holidays, was smashed and a handbag had been taken from the vehicle. The couple involved were obviously very upset by the ordeal.

Just two days later, on Sunday May 21st another vehicle, again a hire car belonging to tourists, was broken into and a number of items were stolen.

A window on the car was broken was a handbag was stolen alongside a suitcase which was taken from the boot of the car.

Last week another car, this time belonging a a German couple holidaying in the area, was also broken into and a number of items, including cash and their passports, were stolen.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have been in the local area at the time and who may have noticed a car or person acting suspicious­ly to contact Drogheda Garda Station.

They also appealed to people visiting local tourist attraction­s and popular scenic walking spots over the summer to ensure that no valuables are left in their vehicles.

Meanwhile, gardaí are also investigat­ing an attack on a couple in the early hours of Saturday morning, May 20th last. The incident happened sometime between 3.30am and 4.30am.

The couple had just left Fusion nightclub on George’s Street when they were set upon by a group of males.

Both received injuries during the attack, the woman had injuries to her jaw while the man had to get stitches to his chin.

Gardaí would like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the attack.

A spokespers­on for the gardaí said: ‘We are still making enquiries and appeal for any witnesses who saw this couple being set up by a group to please come forward. We are also examing CCTV from the area.’
