Extra speed checks this weekend in the county

Extra speed checks will be carried out in County Louth from 7am this Friday to 7am the following day as part of the gardaí’s national ‘Slow Down’ day.

National ‘Slow Down’ Day is supported by the Road Safety Authority, Louth County Council together with other partner stakeholde­rs.

In County Louth, seven people lost their lives on the roads in County Louth during 2016 and six road deaths happened in the county the previous year.

Commenting on the road death figures locally, Road Safety Officer for County Louth Adrian O’Sullivan said: ‘A total of three people have lost their lives on the roads In County Louth to date in 2017, bringing the total of those who have lost their lives since 2007 to 75.

‘I would appeal to all road users in Louth to reduce their speed not just on ‘Slow Down day’ but every time they use the road.’

Inspector Paul Kiernan from Louth Traffic Unit has asked drivers to be aware of increased traffic volumes on the roads this weekend with the An Post Ras arriving in Ardee and crowds flocking to the Guns ‘n’ Roses concert in Slane. ‘I would appeal to all road users to be patient and to drive within the speed limits,’ he said.

Gardai together with Go Safe will be carrying out additional speed checks throughout County Louth over the 24 hour period of ‘Slow Down’ Day.
