Callfor litterinfo campaign inLouth
A call has been made for Louth County Council to to initiate an information campaign to run in tandem with the council’s increased enforcement efforts. In a motion at the May meeting of Drogheda Municipal District, Councillor Kenneth Flood called for the initiative to try and combat the growing trend of illegal dumping in the Municipal District area. He called for an information campaign, listing recycling and bring bank centres in the district and what is allowed to be disposed of there, the reintroduction of Louth County Council’s Eco News and a local media campaign listing the fines and penalties that offenders will incur and detailing LCCs recycling points. Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Flood said: ‘ The amount of illegal dumping taking place is going to increase as the bin companies continue to increase their prices,’ he said. ‘We need a change in mindset similar to what has been done with drink driving. We need to make it socially unacceptable.’ In reply, the council said they are already proactive with the local press and will increase the use of social media to highlight the growing difficulties that unauthorised dumping is causing for residents, traders and visitors.
