Under-19s show a Mean streak

-

DROGHEDA United Under-19s continued their winning form in Athlone on Sunday when they came home with a good win after a tough, physical battle with the home side.

It is an indication of how far this team has come when they can mix physicality with skill and come out on top.

With their midfield talisman Nathan Seery on the injured list alongside Emmet Carolan, Sean Hughes and David Harper, Eoin Broughan came into the starting XI and after an opening quarter of few chances the Drogs eventually took the lead on 25 minutes.

Sean Tunney fed James Carroll on the right wing and Carroll’s cross was dispatched to the net by Lee Partridge.

The Drogs held this lead until half-time and the midfield battle continued on the restart until Drogs striker Stephen Meaney scored a magnificent goal on 78 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.

With his back to the goal and the covering Athlone defender right behind him, he swivelled and struck a brilliant shot into the top corner.

The result means the Under-19s go into the summer break with a record of four wins, a draw and three defeats from their eight Elite Northern Division games to date.

DROGHEDA UNITED: Dylan Sweeney, James Carroll, Craig D’Arcy, Sean Tunney, Sam Reilly, Kyle Molloy, Karl Fitzsimons, Mark Doyle, Stephen Meaney, Eoin Broughan, Lee Partridge.
