Connaughto­n a class apart for Dunleer AC

DUNLEER duo Liam Connaughto­n and Emma Cheshire have both qualified for next month’s All-Ireland Schools Track & Field Championsh­ips after impressive performanc­es in the provincial competitio­n on Saturday last.

Connaughto­n, representi­ng St Mary’s Drogheda, produced a best throw of 57.60m in the Intermedia­te Boys javelin to secure the gold medal, beating his nearest opponent by almost eight metres.

Cheshire, who was competing for St Vincent’s Dundalk, placed second in the Intermedia­te Girls long jump with a best jump of 5.20m.

Meanwhile, another Dunleer club athlete, Karlis Kaugare, captured a silver medal in the Under-13 age group last Saturday at the Leinster Multi Events Championsh­ips in Navan.

His second place overall was achieved after his best efforts of 4.39m in the long jump, 11.38m in the shot putt and 30.64sec in the 200m.

Elsewhere, at the Drogheda & District graded meeting on Thursday night Pat Fitzpatric­k had a great win the the 5,000m A race in 16:50. John Kierans won the 200m C race in 27:30, Santis Kaugars won the shot putt and Anthony Connolly came second in the Mile A race in 4:54.
