LEINSTER SNR LGE ENNISKERRY YC 1 DROGHEDA TOWN 3

HAVING battled against relegation for most of the season, Drogheda Town finished their LSL Major Sunday campaign some 12 points clear of the bottom three thanks to this win on Friday evening.

Robbie Horgan’s squad have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in fortunes and this was their 10th victory from their last 14 games in all competitions.

Two goals inside the first 10 minutes put the Marian Park men firmly in the driving seat against already-relegated Enniskerry down in Wicklow, with Daniel Kerr and Neil Donnelly on target.

Enniskerry showed admirable resistance, however, and went on to create a number of chances of their own, with Town forced to defend heroically at times to keep their goal intact. Eventually, the pressure bore fruit as the home side halved the deficit.

However, Town maintained their composure and they put the result beyond doubt when a corner kick was met with a firm back-post header from Donnelly for 3-1.

That was Donnelly’s fourth goal in the space of 48 hours as he had also scored twice in Wednesday’s 5-1 Lummy O’Reilly Cup victory at home to Parkvilla.

The Navan side actually scored first in that game, but Eoghan Breathnach equalised and Donnelly then struck a brace, including one from the penalty spot.

Emmanuel Santos and Kryz Witowski completed the scoring for Town who now face an away semi-final this Wednesday against the winners of the Ballyfermot v Willow Park tie.
