Local swimmers make a big splash

-

THREE local swimmers’ dedication to their sport has yielded rich dividends after they scooped a huge haul of medals for Aer Lingus at the club’s Annual Swim Meet in the ALSAA Pool.

Julianstown-based Ruby Markey won 100m freestyle gold, 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly silver, bronze in the 100m backstroke and two more golds in the relay events.

She ranked second overall of the female swimmers at the meeting and will compete in the Leinster Division Championship next weekend.

Elena Ortega Guervos, who is now resident in Termonfeckin after moving here from Spain with her family, claimed 100m butterfly gold, 50m breaststroke silver and another gold for the girls relay.

Zoe Wogan, who lives in Bettystown, is in the first full year of competing after moving up from the C squad last September, and she pulled out all the stops to capture first place in the 100m breaststroke with a big personal best.
