HELP STOP SPEEDING MADNESS

- By HUBERT MURPHY

APPEAL MADE TO PARENTS AND SELLERS TO ACT NOW BEFORE A CHILD IS KILLED GARDAI have expressed fears of a tragedy in the Rathmullen, St Finians and Ballsgrove areas following a spate of so called ‘joyriding’ incidents in recent weeks..

Youths have been buying cars and scramblers for hundreds of euro and then driving around the estates at high speed, many without insurance.

It has become so dangerous, an appeal has been made by gardai, asking for a community-centred approach to tackle the problem.

‘We all need to work together to avoid getting that call that a child or elderly person has been knocked down by one of these drivers.

‘With the summer holidays coming, the chances of that call are growing by the minute and we would ask the community to support us in this,’ Superintendent Andrew Watters stated.

He says only a minority are involved in the practice, but they must be stopped before someone gets killed or badly injured.

All Garda mobile units have been tasked with performing additional patrols in the areas concerned. Community Gardaí are liaising with the local authority and in the estates with local residents.

‘All incidents of this nature should be reported, naming the individuals that are in these vehicles and giving the location of where these vehicles are being stored,’ the superintendent continued.
