Mum and kids flee after fire

- BY HUBERT MURPHY

LOCAL RESIDENTS came to the rescue of a woman and her two children when a neighbouring house on Ship Street caught fire on Sunday evening.

Just after 8.20pm, smoke billowing from the roof of a house caught the attention of Marsh Road resident Karen Smyth who rushed to the scene.

She knocked on the door of the house where the woman and two children live, while ringing the fire service.

As the blaze took hold in the roof of the adjoining house, another resident arrived and managed to get the woman to answer the door before she was evacuated.

Fire crews quickly arrived on scene and extinguished the blaze, but the roof of the house was destroyed.

They spent a number of hours at the location.
