Recalling Private Carolan

IT would be good to tell the story of a man who died 100 years ago this July. A few years ago, I visited the grave of Private Carolan of the Machine Gun Corps at Kandahar Farm cemetery near Ieper in Belgium. Like the rest, it’s well kept and is the final resting place of a brave Monasterbo­ice man, the son of Andrew and Mary Anne Carolan, of Coolfore. He was just 21 when he died on July 12, 1917.
