No barrier to success for Boyne

-

BOYNE AC athletes donned the vests of their schools on Saturday last as they competed with flying colours in the National Championships in Tullamore.

Four members from the Boyne club were in action, having qualified through the provincial competition to reach the final, and Kate Kelly threw 10.33m in the Minor shot putt to take her first-ever All-Ireland gold.

Tara Meier took a well-earned bronze in the hurdles against fierce competition, while Lily O’Connor finished eighth overall in her hurdles event and Ruarcan O’Gibne finished fifth in both the 1500m and 800m.

Elsewhere, another Boyne AC star, Amy McTeggart, continued her

winning streak as she took the Women’s heptathlon title at the recent National Combined Events Championships.

Conditions were extremely tough, with events postponed for three hours due to heavy rain, but McTeggart battled her way through and a grand total of 4,302 points earned over the seven events saw her finish a clear 300 points ahead of her nearest competitor.

Her high jump of 1.60m and javelin throw of 30.47m secured the gold medal before the final event, the 800m, where a solid run clinched the deal. Laura Frey (Lagan Valley AC) and Claire Dougherty (Derry AC Spartans) finished second and third respectively.
