DULEEK BNS took the honours in style in Division 1 of the Drogheda Primary Schools Chess League.

They finished on 11 points, 3.5 ahead of second placed Scoil Muire gan Smál. The Duleek team were Derek Morris, Ben Russell, Daniel Ryan, Jake Meehan and Damian Szydarski.

Board prize winners were Ben Russell, Daniel Ryan, Damian Szydarski (Duleek), Daniel Whelan, Beth Savage, Robert McCarthy and Fionn Tiernan (Scoil Mhuire gan Smál), and Shane Loughran (St. Peters)

St Joseph’s took the honours in Division 2 of the Drogheda Primary Schools Chess League with a score of 13/15.

Scoil Naomh Fechin finish second on 9/15. The St Joseph’s team were Kaylum McDonagh, Andrew Ospanon, Daniel Kavanagh, Sean Conroy and Noel Varghese.

Board Prize winners were: Kaylum McDonagh, Andrew Ospanon, Daniel Kavanagh, Sean Conroy and Noel Varghese (St Josephs) and Freddie Morgan, Angel Ortega, Kartal Yildiriw and BJ Cisse (Scoil Naomh Fechin)

Drogheda Grammar School is the 2017 Secondary Schools Chess Champions with a magnificen­t score of 35/40.

However, the real drama was the battle for 2nd place with three schools in contention going into the final round of matches.

Coláiste na hInse, Laytown were on 14.5 points and played De la Salle College, Dundalk (16.5 points) in their final match.

St Josephs, who were also on 14.5 points, play Greenhills and realistica­lly whoever scores the most points will finish runner up. De la Salle College defeated Coláiste na hInse by a score of 7-1 and pipped St. Josephs by half a point.

The DGS team were Piotr Baczkowski, Tim Daly, Bartez Walkowiek, Julia Meza- Ozorio, Oran McKenna, Ronan Egan, Pearse Quinn, Krysten Kilarski, Hugo, Charles Jiang, David Monaghan and James Martin.

The Presentati­on of prizes took place in St Peter’s Parish Hall, Peters Hill, Drogheda on Tuesday last.
