1 I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) Whitney Houston 2 Hold Me Now Johnny Logan 3 Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now Starship 3 I Want Your Sex George Michael 5 Jack Mix II/III Mirage 6 I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For U2 7 Shattered Dreams Johnny Hates Jazz 8 Victim Of Love Erasure 9 Goodbye Stranger Pepsi and Shirlie 10 Wishing I Was Lucky Wet Wet Wet

From an Irish point of view, this is an interesting UK top ten from 30 years ago this week, not long after Johnny Logan had written himself into Eurovision history books with a second win in the contest. His ‘Hold Me Now’ is now widely regarded as one of Eurovision’s best ever songs, but it never reached number one in the UK, held off the top spot by Whitney Houston’s first single from her second album. In a far greater injustice, U2’s ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ didn’t make it past number 6 and was tumbling back down the charts the following week. Often included in lists of best songs of all time, ‘I Still Haven’t Found…’ is a fan favourite. Los Angeles Times critic Robert Hilburn called it U2’s ‘Let It Be’. The late Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’ topped the charts in 13 countries, but not Ireland. U2 and Johnny Logan saw to that.
