15 youths attack delivery worker

15 youths in attack on delivery man at rear of Castle Manor

-

RENEWED calls are being made to secure an area at the rear of a northside estate after a delivery worker was attacked and robbed by up to 15 youths .

The delivery man got a call to go to the rear of the Castle Manor estate with an order on Friday evening.

When he arrived, a group of between 10 to 15 youths were waiting for him. Gardai confirmed he was assaulted and robbed of his food.

The location has been the scene of a number of previous incidents, one of the most serious two years ago when a female driver was held up at gunpoint.

A hole in a boundary ditch, close to Boyne rugby club, has become a favoured escape route as it is only accessible on foot.

Residents have campaigned for years to get the hole blocked up and the latest incident will only add to the level of calls.

A series of letters have been sent to Louth County Council and meetings have been facilitated on site, but all to no avail.

The residents have also made contact with the gardai in a bid to secure their support to have the ‘ bolt-hole’ closed for good.

A DELIVERY man was assaulted and robbed of his food order by a group of up to 15 youths after being drawn to an area at the rear of the Castle Manor estate on the Ballymakenny Road.

The incident unfolded just after 9pm on Friday night when the driver arrived at the drop off point to be met by a group of young males, numbering between 10 and 15.

‘ They accosted the man and stole the food,’ a garda spokesman stated.

Local residents have been campaigning for a number of years to get a nearby hole in a boundary ditch closed to prevent such incidents.

That followed an attack in 2015 when residents were awoken in the early hours of the morning by a woman screaming for help after being robbed at gun and knifepoint.

The delivery worker was set upon at the same place, the thieves making good their escape through a notorious ‘ bolthole’ close by.

The gap in the hedge has become an anti-social nightmare for nearby residents - who have warned the council about the dangers of it on numerous occasions.

‘We were awoken to hear the poor lady screaming on the street after being robbed. We have just had enough at this stage,’ a resident told the Drogheda Independent at the time.

The woman had arrived with a supposed delivery at 12.10am when she was approached by two individuals with their faces covered. One pointed a gun at her and screamed for at her for the takeaway while her handbag was also snatched.

The latest incident is set to thrust the issue back into the headlines.
