Russell and Markey wanted a greater interest in farmers body

-

An effort is about to be made to put the National Farmers Association on a firmer footing in the south end of Louth.

Mr. N. Russell, Tullyallen, speaking at an executive meeting on Thursday night, thought it a “disgrace “that this stretch of the county was not better organised. There were three parishes in and around Drogheda and he doubted if there were more than a handful of members in them.

Mr. Russell added that only that very night he had been told that Tullyallen branch of the Association had been withdrawn last year by a certain individual. He wondered if this was accurate information.

Former chairman of the County Executive, and one time organiser, Mr. Kelly, Dunleer, said that this was inaccurate.

Mr. Russell commented that there were no tractors from the south end of the county at the Drogheda road demonstration in January.

Mr. P. Kearney, Tallanstown, said that all along there seemed a very luke warm approach in the area mentioned by Mr. Russell. As far as he could see, “there was just no interest. ‘

Mr. Markey, chairman, Louth N.F.A. Organising Committee, said that plans were afoot to change things. Members of his own branch were ready to go into Monasterboice area that weekend. It was the Committee’s intention to concentrate on one area at a time.

The chairman expressed the hope that the efforts of Mr. Markey and his colleagues, would be fruitful. This was the time of the year they would all like to hear that the south end of Louth was up and doing.
