Walkers get to enjoy a talk on the town tour
EVEN the very inclement weather did not prevent the latest ODS Walk and Talk event (above) from going ahead on Wednesday evening.
In the circumstances a very large crowd gathered at the Railway Station, drawn by the great reputation of Community Historian, Brendan Matthews, who took his audience on a guided walk that explained the background to the erection of the railway viaduct, the enormous engineering task involved in the project and the difference it meant to the travelling public.
He then led the walk through the grounds of St. Mary’s hospital, which in times past housed the old Workhouse built in the 1830s. Brendan brought to life some horrific stories about the treatment of the most unfortunate of our ancestors, especially during the Great Famine.
The Walk then proceeded to Sunnyside to view Cromwell’s Mount, formerly a great prehistoric Mound that is underappreciated and undervalued. Brendan’s gave a fascinating overview of what is known about this very important monument.
The next Walk and Talk will be held next Wednesday, 14th June when Liam Reilly will lead a tour from Sunday’s Gate, illustrated with many interesting tales of people associated with this area. Further information is available from Drogheda Museum Millmount.
