THE Louth U17 hurlers are through to the semi final of Division 5 of the Celtic Challenge following this impressive victory over Mayo in windy conditions at the Abbotstown Gaa Centre in Dublin last Saturday afternoon.

Having started four of the previous group games as goalkeeper Naomh Moninne’s Darren Geoghegan filled an important outfit position for this quarter final and once again he was influentia­l in guiding his side to victory scoring 1-7 of his sides tally.

The Wee County played with the assistant of the strong breeze in the first half and grabbed two goals in this period from Ultan McEneaney and Sean Kerrisk. Points from Geoghegan (6), Paul McEvoy, Philip Tynan and Padraic Fallon had them leading at the break by 2-9 to 1-2.

The second half proved to be a low scoring affair as both sides struggled with the elements but good Louth defending managed to keep the westerners scoreless until five minutes from the end when they grabbed a consolatio­n goal.

A goal and a point from top scorer Darren Geoghegan was the total return for Louth in the second half as they ran worthy winner to set up a semi final meeting against Roscommon at Abbotstown on Saturday (1.00).
