VANDALS WRECK ALLOTMENTS SITE

-

MEMBERS of the Drogheda Allotments group, based at Newtown, were left devastated again after vandals struck overnight on Saturday/Sunday, stealing tools and plants.

It is the fifth time the allotmets have been targeted but those who form part of the community reacted by getting back to work! A number of the plots had tools and plants stolen, a BBQ, wheelbarrow, ornaments and other items were also taken.

Sheds and greenhouses were also ransacked. Last year, a rotavator, mower and strimmer were taken in a robbery. They were the victims of an arson attack a few years ago. Those attending the allotments were shocked by the vandalism.

‘ This isn’t the first time it’s happened, but this is the worst it’s ever been. Trees, flowers and berry bushes uprooted, plants stolen, pots and ornaments broken. If someone is going to steal tools for money then ,whatever, but to vandalise a place where people put hours of time and effort into..? There are just no words. They have no idea how much an allotment can mean to someone. I’m so sorry to the people who have had their hard work destroyed,’ one person remarked.

The Drogheda Allotments (Drogheda Community Allotments Association ) was formed in May of 2010 with the help and funding of the then Drogheda Borough Council. There are 40 working allotments ranging from 50 meters squared to 200 meters sugared using Organic and Traditional work methods.
