Disabled parking permits are being abused in Drogheda

- By HUBERT MURPHY

SOME people are abusing disabled parking spaces to such an extent that they use permits belonging to people who are deceased.

The claim was made by Cllr Paul Bell at last week’s council meeting, add that there was ‘ongoing and widespread abuse and misuse of the disabled car parking system in our town’.

He added that people were parking for the whole day in the restricted parking areas and was told of one instance when someone parked and went off to work in a local shop.

He says passes are being passed to different vehicles and it ‘does nothing for those that are using them properly.’

Changing the bylaws to prevent all day parking in disabled places is needed he stated.

Cllr Riichie Culhane agreed and said people should be reported while Cllr Tommy Byrne asked that such spaces be identified with blue and white paint so there can’t be any excuses.

Director of Services Paddy Donnelly said that the council don’t issue the permits, while they require a picture, car details are not supplied. He said there was ‘zero tolerance’ from the council on the issue and they have ‘upped the ante’ on enforcement.
