Silverstream Monastery has an incredible history
I WAS reading about the history of the Silverstream Monastery in Stamullen and what a story it tells.
The property is owned by the Sisters of the Visitation Convent of St Mary’s, Drogheda and The Benedictine Monks of Our Lady of the Cenacle came to occupy the property in 2012 and became the third religious order to occupy Silverstream House. The Prioy house was built in 1843.
The lands were once owned by the Prestons, a Catholic family of the Lords of Gormanston. The property was purchased by the Hospitaller Brothers of St John of God in 1942 and placed under the protection of the Little Flower, St Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face. It became a home for young men with learning difficulties. The church of St Therese was built by 40 volunteers and it was opened and blessed by Dr Kyne on May 18 1952.
In 1955, St John of God pulled out of Stamullen due to low water supply.
The Order of the Visitation purchased it in September 1955. Nuns were sent from the UK and USA to help staff the first community. They remained there until December 2011.
