Sr Mary Columba and 80 years in the Siena Convent

-

A STORY from 80 years ago this year. The Drogheda Independent ran a story on the death of Mother M Columba Murray of the Siena nuns on the Chord Road.

She was 93 and had spent 80 years within the walls of the monastery.

When she was 13, she lost both of her parents and was placed in the Siena.

She came from a very religious family. Her brother was an Augustinian and died in 1914 in Australia.

Her sister was the Rev Mother Imelda of the Mercy Convent in Ennis. Another sister was Sr M De Salis, who passed away at an early age in the Siena.

She was a niece of Dr JJ Carberry, Bishop of Hamilton,USA.

She had been attending daily mass until three months before her death in 1937.
