New Mellifont signs

-

THE OPW has confirmed that new signage will be erected at Mellifont Abbey warning visitors of the risk to valuables left in cars.

Recent break-ins to cars at the Abbey car park prompted Senator Ged Nash to make contact with the Office of Public Works who have now confirmed that new signage will be introduced shortly.

“While there is a guide service at the site from June to late August, there is of course year-round access to the site for the general public.

“I asked the OPW to examine the feasibility of introducing CCTV surveillance for the site but they will not commit to this approach due to the fact that the Abbey is staffed only for the summer months and therefore the systems cannot be monitored in real time.

“New signage will be erected on the popular site and I would of course warn visitors to heritage sites such as Mellifont Abbey and Monasterboice to be vigilant at all times.

“Local residents, staff at sites and the Gardai liaise regularly on safety and security and that work continues.”
