More homes needed quickly in Drogheda

-

‘WE are working at a snail’s pace on providing housing in Drogheda’.

That’s the view of Cllr Frank Godfrey (right) who again raised the issue of the town’s accommodation crisis at council level.

‘People have been waiting for 10 years and we must start council housing schemes again. People don’t see a chance of owning their own house. €700 to €1,000 is a lot of money for rent for a young couple and a family,’ he said.

Cllr Oliver Tully said that Scarlet Street had permission for 15 houses and the Rathmullen Road 105 houses but 12 months on nothing seemed to be happening.

‘What’s going on, we don’t have control over these agencies, yet Boice Court will be finished in 12 months.’

Senior Executive Officer Aoife Lawler said that the Scarlet St development was being discussed but the agency had to go back for more approval while builders hoped to be on site in three months on the Rathmullen Road.

Cllr Richie Culhane said that more bungalows needed to be added to the housing stock and he knew of one case where a child with specific needs was unable to get up the stairs of the family home.
