LEDWIDGE CENTENARY

The Francis Ledwidge Centenary celebratio­ns commence this Thursday, June 22nd and continue until Sunday, July 2nd. This Thursday there is an art exhibition inspired by the poetry of Francis Ledwidge, in Slane Parish Hall at 7.30pm, with reception. Artists featured include Liam O’Broin, Mary McDonnell and Helen Tully. Friday June 23rd–Michael Moylan Irish History live in Slane library at 10am ‘Francis Ledwidge’s War;’ Poetry Dinner with special guest Marie Heaney and music by Dearbhail Finnegan and Robert Slater in Conyngham Arms Hotel, at 7.30pm. This event is sold out. Saturday, June 24th–Hill of Slane Tours ‘Ledwidge and the Hill of Slane,’ at noon; National day of Commemorat­ion at Ledwidge Museum, at 2.30pm, all welcome to attend. Sunday June 25th–‘Off by Heart’ children’s event and prize giving for best oration of Ledwidge poem, in Conyngham Arms Hotel at 3pm; Johnstons Folk Festival ‘Ledwidge Music Night’ in Village Garden at 7pm; The Slane Guitar Trio in Village Garden at 8.30pm. Monday June 26–‘World War 1 and Ledwidge’ afternoon tea dance, with Slane Active Retirement group and Slane Youth Cafe, in Inside Out Restaurant at 3pm; ‘Sean Tyrrell sings Ledwidge,’in Boyles pub, doors open at 8pm. Tuesday June 27th–Slane Striders Walk ‘In the footsteps of Ledwidge,’ 7pm; Slane Historical Society Ledwidge Lecture by Dr Danny Cusack, in Slane Youth Cafe at 8pm.

TABLE QUIZ

A Table quiz in aid of the Slane/ Drogheda Branch Organisati­on of National Ex-service men and women takes place in the Village Inn, Slane this Friday, June 23rd at 8.30pm. Table of four €40, contact Ronnie on 087 2789897 for further details.

MIDSUMMER WALK

A midsummer walk for the homeless in aid of the Fr Peter McVerry Trust takes place on Saturday, June 24th. It starts from Maguire’s Cafe on the Hill of Tara at noon and finishes at Newgrange Farm (32km). Alternativ­ely you can start at Navan Ramparts at 1.15pm, finishing at Slane (12km). HILL OF SLANE TOURS

Hill of Slane free guided tours by local volunteers have commenced and will continue until September. Discover what the beautiful Hill of Slane has to offer, breathtaki­ng scenery and centuries of history, all waiting to be discovered. Tours every Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. GALA BALL 2017

Following on from the great success of last year’s Motor Neurone Summer Gala Ball it has been decided to organise another Ball this year, on Friday, June 23rd in the renowned Headfort Arms Hotel, Kells. The evening commences with a Prosecco reception at 7.30 followed by dinner. The organisers are thrilled to have Miriam O’Callaghan as MC for the night and are delighted to welcome back the very talented Ronan Collins and his band to provide the music. There will be a raffle and auction on the night as well as lots of spot prizes. Everybody is invited to come along and have a fabulous evening in beautiful surroundin­gs and support a fantastic organisati­on. BLOOD DONOR CLINIC

The Blood Transfusio­n Service mobile clinic will be in Teach Raithneach, Starinagh, this Thursday, June 22nd, from 4.30 to 8pm.

FUN RUN/WALK

Syddan GFC have a four mile fun run/walk on Tuesday, June 27th at 8pm. Entry fee is €15 with registrati­on on Monday, June 26th from 7–9pm at the GAA grounds.

SUMMER CAMP

Greenhills, Drogheda, Summer Sports Camp will take place this year for two weeks: July 10th – 14th & July 17th – 21st. This year we have added two fantastic new activities; The Rodeo Bull Ride & The Wipeout Game- also known as The Last Man Standing. GOLF CLASSIC

Duleek-Bellewstow­n GFC are holding their annual Golf Classic at Bellewstow­n GC this Saturday 24th June. Tee times from 10am to 2pm. LEDWIDGE CYCLE

Skane Valley Community Council in conjunctio­n with Francis Ledwidge Museum Committee have a Ledwidge Centenary Cycle from Slane to Dunsany on Sunday, July 2nd. It is a gentle spin along roads the poet knew so well. Assemble at Slane NS at 2.30pm. It will be followed by a Ledwidge Evening at Dunsany GAA clubhouse.
