Recently you all read about the wonderful community art project that took place to mark the closing of St. John’s building in Rathmullen.
Have no fears though. The school is still very much alive and just waiting to get into their new building in the autumn.
They are still involved in vibrant arts activities and recently the school orchestra was invited to perform in the National Concert Hall as part of the Royal Irish Academy’s Primary Ensemble Project.
The school is one of only 9 nationwide who received this honour so you can appreciate how fantastic this is.
Since last October the children in St. John’s 2nd class (all aged 7 or 8) have been learning to play a stringed instrument through the Music Generation Programme in Co. Louth.
Their performance of First Finger Pachelbel and Amazing Grace in the Concert Hall was amazing and very much appreciated by the parents and wider school community who travelled to Dublin for the event. The orchestra and school choir have also recently performed in Holy Family Church and at the Barbican Theatre in Drogheda. Principal Dympna Mac Kenna spoke to the Drogheda Independent of her pride in the wonderful achievements of these children and the school staff who make it all possible. “The children in these music groups have surpassed themselves this year.
Our choir has been long standing and successful but to see our full orchestra perform in the Concert Hall was a very emotional moment for me.
I hope it is the beginning of a long career in music for many of these children.
I want to say a great big thank you to school staff and Music Generation who put so much into making this happen and to the wonderful parents who encourage their children in their work.
Keep it up and the rewards will be great”
