Fechin’s edge tight battle

RECENT meetings between the sides have been high scoring affairs, however this round 6 League match in Cluskey Park was low on scores with both sides squanderin­g numerous good scoring opportunit­ies, before the Fechin’s ultimately came out on top.

In the opening minutes Eoin Duffy who starred at centre back showed his scoring prowess with two excellent points for the Fechins. The Joes drew level on 10 minute with points from frees by Alan Quigley and Conal O’Hanlon.

Scores were hard to get and a Thomas Smyth put the Joes ahead following a quick off load from O’Hanlon. A fine long range effort from Peter Brennan had the Joes ahead by 0-4 to 0-2 on 18 minutes.

The Joes then lost Conall Smyth to a black card with Ronan Holcroft converting the resultant free. Alan Quigley hit his second long range free from just inside the 45m line to restore the Joes two point lead. The Fechins led by the strong running Bevan Duffy finished the half strongly, Ronan Holcroft added points from a 30m free and a second from open play as the sides went into the break on 0-5 each.

The Joes opened the second half brightly with points from Derek Mulligan and superb individual effort from Alan Quigley on 34 minutes, however this was a good as it got for the Joes as they would register just one more point in the half.

The Fechins took control around midfield, building from defence, with Ronan Holcroft, Jamie King and Bevan Duffy were all on target as the Fechins went on to win by four points to continue their push for promotion.
