Syddan left to reflect on wide count

-

WALTERSTOWN 1-15

SYDDAN 2-9

MISSED opportunities proved costly as Syddan went down to their seventh defeat league defeat in Ludlow Park on Friday.

Syddan started well with an opening point from Sean Clare and they were 1-2 to 0-1 ahead after Gary Farrelly converted from the spot following a foul on Mark Fedigan on 11 minutes.

Walterstown hit the next five scores, however, to lead by the minimum after 20 minutes. Further points from Cormac Rowe and Clare had the sides level on two occasions after that.

Then two minutes before the break Cormac Rowe struck for Syddan’s second goal and Brian Dillon added a point to edge his side into a four-point lead.

It was 2-5 to 0-8 at the interval, but Walterstown started strongly in the second half as they outscored the home side four points to one to be on level terms by the 40th minute, 0-12 to 2-6.

The visitors tightened their grip on proceedings after that with a point from Aaron McLoughlin, before Brian O’Connell set up Alan Wall for a crucial goal on 50 minutes. That left Syddan facing an uphill battle, and while they got the deficit back to two points it was too little too late.
