Under-17s are out of luck

CAVAN/MONAGHAN 3

THREE goals in the final half-hour handed Cavan/Monaghan a solid victory in this Under-17 Northern Division clash after Drogheda United had missed a hatful of opportunities.

In the early stages the Boynesiders were solid in defence, with Sam Byrne, Derick Dunne and Stephen Doran giving little away. Drogheda also competed well in midfield, but it was hard for strikers Kian Hussey and Callum McDonald to create clear chances against two resolute Monaghan centre-halves.

Hussey created the first opening after a fine pass by Sean Peats. He took a heavy touch but still got his shot away which went wide. Then Leo Tang was unlucky when his effort from the halfway line clipped the top of the crossbar.

The deadlock was broken on the hour mark when a long-range shot from Monaghan rolled in under Daniel Grace.

Sub Tom Adeyinka gave the Drogs more of an attacking threat, but he was denied by the keeper and the home side added two more late goals.

DROGHEDA UNITED: Daniel Grace, Niall Blaney, Sam Byrne, Derick Dunne, Stephen Doran, Leo Tang, Karl Spooner, Michael McHugh, Sean Peat, Callum McDonnell, Kian Hussey. Subs: Harry Hogan, Frank Cabraley, Gregory Akinsanya, Tom Adeyinka.
