Meaney at the double for 19s

DROGHEDA UNITED 5 CAVAN/MONAGHAN 2

DROGHEDA United Under-19s continued their winning ways when running out convincing winners over Cavan/ Monaghan on Saturday at United Park.

The squad was down to the bare bones, but Stephen Meaney, who did so well for the first team in Tallaght the previous night, was the star of the show and has now scored 10 in nine games.

He capped a masterful display with two great goals and boss Derek Boyle will lose him to the first-team squad.

On three minutes old James Carroll sent over a great cross and Grogan planted a great header into the corner of the net. Slackness in the home defence gifted the visitors an equaliser, but the Drogs regained the lead with an own goal. Then Meaney beat the opposition defence and slotted an unbelievable left-footer to the net from an acute angle.

Leading 3-1 at half-time, the Drogs added to this total through a clever goal from Broughan and another from Meaney before the visitors scored a consolation penalty in the closing minutes. DROGHEDA UNITED: Mark Devlin, James Carroll, Craig Darcy, Sean Tunney, Sam Reilly, Kyle Molloy (Cian Quinn), Karl Fitzsimons, Sean Hughes (Lee McGuinness), Eoin Broughan, Stephen Meaney, Conor Grogan.
