DUNDALK

CONGRATULATIONS to Caolan Rafferty on winning the silver medal for leading qualifier at the British Open Amateur Championship last week. He set a course record 62 at Prince’s and then reached the last 32 before losing to World No. 24 Alejandro Tosti of Argentina on the 25th tie hole.

Trevor Giff (12) won the PGA Tankard on Sunday won countback from John McLaughlin (25) after both had shot excellent scored of 41pts.

Three pars in the first three holes yield nine points for Gill and although he dropped shots on the sixth and eighth a birdie two on the par three ninth earned home another three points and a front nine total of 20pts,.

A dropped shot on the 10th was followed by an excellent par on the index two 11th and after bogeying the 12th for two points Giff reeled of three successive three point holes as he parred 13 and 15 and birdied 14. His final three point hole was the 18th which came after he dropped a shot at the 17th but the one point earned there proved vital as his 21pts haul on the back nine was enough to edge out McLaughlin.

Frank Byrne (8) took Category 1 with 40pts while Gerry McDermott (17) was the Category 2 winner thanks to a superb back nine score of 23pts which was enough to edge out Michael Hamailton (15) after both finished on 39pts. Michael Greene (19) also needed his back nine score of 21pts to see off vice captain Gerry Byrne after both finished on 38pts.

After picking up just two points from his opening three holes, Eddie Rogers (3) rallied in superb fashion over the remaining 15 holes and claimed the Gross Prize with a score of 32pts.

Seventeen-year-old Eoin Murphy became the latest Dundalk player to reach scratch this week and he did it in some style by winning the Overall and Gross Prizes in Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford. Playing off one he shot a gross round of 40pts and a net round of 41pts and not even a blank at the 15th could halt his march to scratch. Conor McGleenon (11) from The Island took Category 1 while David Cairns (16) won Category 2 and Tom Geray (21) claimed Category 3. The juvenile prize went to Timmy Connolly (24)

Dundalk bowed out of the Irish Senior Cup over the weekend. After beating Greenore and Black Bush in the opening rounds on Saturday at their Regional Qualifying tournament, Dundalk faced Co Louth on Sunday morning in the regional semi-final but went down 3.5 to 1.5 with Caolan Rafferty the only Dundalk winner on the day.

However, the Fred Daly team continued their good run with a with a 3.5 to 1.5 win over The Island on Sunday. In the away legs, Kyle Rafferty had a 3&2 win but Conal Murdock was beaten. In the home legs a 2&1 win for Eoin Murphy and a 6&4 win for Eamonn Laverty secured Dundalk a place in the Leinster semi-finals with Josh Mackin level after 15 when his match was called in.

The Leinster U15 Inter Club team are also through the next round of their competition after a good win over Roganstown. In the away leg there were wins for Michael Staunton, Declan Curran and Joseph Laverty while the home legs saw Tom Donne, Declan Curran and Zac Alderdyce win to give Dundalk a 6-4 victory.

Josh Mackin finished joint 20th in the Ulster Boys U16 Championship at Donaghadee Golf Club last week,.

LUMPER’S SOCIETY

THE society travelled the short distance to Ballymascanlon Golf Course on Saturday, June 17th, to compete for Captain, Gerry Malones’ Prize. Gerry was at the course from early in the day to greet the golfers as they arrived and to present each one of them with a goodies bag to keep them fed and refreshed during the course of the round.

As usual, the golf course was presented in an excellent condition and with beautiful sunshine throughout the day, the golfers had a most enjoyable round of golf. Although Ballymac is a relatively short course, the narrow fairways on a number of holes call for strategic club selection off the tee and the golfers who managed to put together good scores, employed good overall course management. With the Captains’ Prize being the premier competition of the year, the winner, Thomas Dullaghan managed to register his first victory with the society when it mattered most. Thomas scored an excellent 39 points and just pipped the runner-up, David Lambe by a single shot.

When the round had concluded, the group enjoyed a meal and refreshments in the hotel. Before the presentation of prizes, Captain, Gerry thanked the Golf Coordinator at Ballymascanlon, Gerry Campbell for his assistance in organising the event. He also thanked the management and staff of the hotel for the use of their facilities and for providing a delicious meal.

The Prize winners were as follows: 1st Thomas Dullaghan, 2nd David Lambe, 3rd Niall Breen, 4th Peter Callan, Visitors prize Donal Duffy and Joe Mc Cann, Nearest the pin Neil Murtagh, Longest drive Niall Breen.

In finishing just outside the prizes and picking up five points, Tommy Mc Guinness has consolidated his position at the top of the leaderboard and is in a strong position to become ‘Golfer of the Year 2017’. However, with plenty of points still to play for over the two counting events that remain, a number of other golfers will fancy their chances of overtaking him before the conclusion of this competition.

The next outing will be at Dundalk Golf Club on Saturday, July 15th, where the members will be competing for the Presidents Liam Manning’s prize.

Our Junior Cowdy team kept up the defence of the title they won last year by overcoming a huge deficit against Cloverhill in the second leg at Mannan Castle on Sunday. Trailing 3.5 to half a point from the first leg, they needed to win all four matches and that’s exactly what they done.

Our Super Thursday Open is in full swing. We are always pleased to welcome visitors to our course, and with great prizes on offer, it’s well worth getting in touch.
