Mickey Leech and John Craven star as Francis Street best

-

THE latest finals of the Abbey Indoor soccer league took place last week.

Honours were divided between Drogheda (men’s) and Dundalk (ladies’) for the male final was contested by two local sides in Francis Street Blues and Virginians, while the ladies contest saw Sputniks from Dundalk take on the Everglades from Drogheda.

Francis Street had. a rather easy 5-1 victory over the Virginians in a match in which there was never any real doubt about the outcome following a two-minute goal for the winner from Mickey Leech.

The Blues always looked the more likely combination and had further goals from Leech, John Craven (2) and Billy Tiernan before the hardworking Donal Culligan, who played his heart out in an effort to get his side moving, had a consolation score for Virginians, seconds before the final whistle.

Once again a Dundalk team has won the ladies competition. Before this, it was the Casuals, that fine side from the North County, who took the laurels and in the latest series it has been the fine Sputniks side from the Border town who have come out on top.

They had a fine 3-0 win over the Everglades in the final, during which the deciding factor was the greater combination of the Dundalk girls.
