Big turnout for Summer League

-

THERE was a great turnout of members for the Summer League Doubles at Greenhills last Thursday night.

In the first match of the night Eugene McKenna and Jack Howell used all of their experience and tactical knowhow to see off Alice Leonard and Val Haggins.

Eugene and Jack made a blistering start, racing into a five-shot lead, but Alice and Val eventually found their rhythm and cut the deficit to two. However, Eugene and Jack upped their game again in the last end to take a deserved victory by four shots.

In the second match, Josephine Moran and Aileen Fitzgerald took on Peter Woods and Tom Devin. Josephine and Aileen made a superb start to open a strong four-shot lead. Peter and Tom eventually stopped the rot and over the last three ends the game ebbed and flowed with both teams playing superb draw shots to the head, showing off their creative skills. A draw looked the likely outcome until Tom and Peter put tremendous pressure on their opponents in the last end to scrape through by three shots in a very tense finish.

In the third match John Hurley and Jimmy Flood were pitted against Gertie Griffin and Jackie Maher. It was a keenly contested affair early on with Jackie and Gertie taking a four-shot lead. John and Jimmy got their act together and some sustained pressure saw them run out comfortable winners, despite that very slow start.

The final game of the night was a fitting finale, with Sean Donnelly and Maire Maher taking on Claire Woods and Tony Lacken in a cracker. The latter enjoyed the majority of the possession in the first two ends getting their nose in front two up.

Sean was instrumental in getting back into the game to even the score in the forth end. Claire and Tony eventually hauled themselves back into contention in the next end going two up.

Sean and Marie were under pressure at this stage of the game fearing they would pay for their missed opportunities in the earlier ends not matching their opponents’ desire.

They managed to take the sixth end cutting the deficit to one with one end remaining. It was all guns blazing in the final end with the tension running high not giving one another an inch with Tony and Claire stealing the game at the death by one shot in an excellent game played by four experienced players.

Congratulations have been extended to Greenhills juvenile member Ciara Floyd and Sean Conroy senior in winning the A Open Doubles competition in the Redeemer last Tuesday night.

Note to all members, the draw for the Summer League Doubles will take place at 8.30pm sharp.

Times of play Thursday juveniles 7-8pm, seniors 8-10pm.
