SCOIL NAOMH FEICHIN.

The teachers, staff and children in Scoil Naomh Feichin have had a very busy year and this was evident at the Presentation and Graduation Ceremony in the School last Monday.

The School Chess team emerged as Runners Up in the 2017 Primary Schools Chess League. There was also a Chess League held in the School for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Classes, Maisie Kelly (winner 3rd Class), Favour Chuks (runner-up), Seamus Rushe (winner 4th Class), Liam Hall (runner up), Angel Ortega (winner 5th Class), Kartal Yildirim (runner up), Freddie Morgan (winner 6th Class), Eoghan Sayers (runner up). A Skipathon also proved to be a popular event and the Skipping Class Champions for 2017 were Louis Maguire (Junior Infants), Summer Geraghty (Senior Infants), Aoibha Cassidy (1st Class) and Tadhg Kelly (also 1st Class), Addison Kelly (2nd Class), Adam Fahey and Alice Johnson (both 3rd Class), Aoidhri Mc Groddy (4th Class), Breanna Johnston and Jayne Smith (both 5th Class) and B.J. Cisse (6th Class).

Some projects were undertaken during the year including “Fresh Water Bio Diversity in the Ballywater River in Termonfeckin” in conjuction with Officers from the Inland Fisheries, “Something Fishy” with Navan Education Centre, “Elementary Engineering Workshops” with USA Science Teacher Scott Ziglinski and the School retained its 4Star Standard in the Louth Co. Council G.R.O.W. Awards. The U11 and U13 teams did great in the Credit Union Schools Quiz, boys and girls entered the Swimming, Art and Handwriting sections in the Co. Louth Community Games and the boys and girls Football and Hurling teams performed in the Schools Championships. Scoil Naomh Feichin joined up with Termonfeckin Tennis Club resulting in the School team participating in the Leinster Primary Schools Tennis League in Naas.

It was a year when some of the children met with royalty having been present at a Bio Diversity Conference in Drogheda last week where they met his Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco and also received a Certificate of Recognition for their participation. A Certificate was also received by the School for participating in the Peter O’ Reilly Memorial Cup (Soccer). The School was well represented in the Children’s Handwriting Section of the Co. Louth Agricultural Show and received many Rosettes. First Place Rosettes were presented to Emilija Kapociute, Anna Feeney, Anna Mc Nulty, Katie Cleary, Shannon Briscoe and Neda Totilaite. Second Place Rosettes went to Libby Savage and Muirinn Hynes and Third Place Rosettes were received by Summer Geraghty, Anna Mc Gowan, Olivia Byrne and Aoife Mc Groddy. Very Highly Commended, Highly Commended and Commended Awards for Handwriting went to Cillian O’Gorman, Tomasina Mulholland, Emily Mc Nulty, Leo Duff, Comhall Ferriter, Nora Collier, Cara Lodge Lau and Eimear Hughes.

There was a double award for Neda Totilaite from 6th Class as her handwriting qualified for the Dundalk/Newry Intershows Competition which she also won. There was participation in the “Spelling Bee” competition with Dorota Rusin from 6th Class going on to represent the School. Certificates were presented to a number of boys and girls who showed excellent attendance records for the year, some missing no days, one day and two days. Finally the “Student of the Year” Trophy was presented to Edie Ryan, very well deserved.

Principal Bryan Collins paid tribute to all the children, the teaching staff, caretaker Eamonn Murphy and all the parents for their support during the year. Mr Collins noted that three teachers would be leaving this year, namely Mr. Donal Casey, Ms. Hannah Clayton and Ms. Helen Campbell. He said the School was very sorry to see them go as they made a huge contribution while they worked there and he wished them well. Three teachers are returning following maternity leave, Lorraine Collins, Nicola Carolan and Sinead Sweeney.

Mr Collins also stated he is hopeful that work on the much needed School Extension will have begun before the School reopens on Thursday August 31st. Applications for the new School Year are still being accepted, to enroll, email: office@scoilnaomhfeichin.ie

LIP SYNC BATTLE

Performers are set to battle it out on stage at a St. Fechin’s fundraising Lip Sync Battle taking place in City North Hotel on December 30th next. Details of the event were launched in Forge Field Farm last week as footballers, parents and locals listened intently and dreamed up eyecatching – and vote catching – song and dance routines.

The aim of the event is to raise funds towards the construction of a Community Centre to serve the greater Termonfeckin area, according to Club Chairman, John McEvoy. ‘The club relocated the pitches to Beaulieu 17 years ago, and plans for the accompanying Community Centre were put on hold due to the downturn in the economy. However, I am confident that this is the right time to go ahead with it now. Peter Briscoe of St Fechin’s LGFC said it will be a community building for the whole parish and it is up to club members to make this a success. Lip Sync Battles Ireland manager, Cecil Carter detailed the running order, with weeks of preparation in singing, dancing, choreography and stage performance ideas, as well as fundraising tips. ‘Ideally there will be 12-15 groups taking part, with judges and compere there on the night making it an excellent event, he said. Fundraising ideas are already being dreamed up – as are some mad outfits and acts. Chairman John Mc Evoy says there can be nobody on the sidelines for this show.
