Hundreds backing the future of the Drogheda market

-

HUNDREDS of people have signed a petition on behalf of Drogheda’s ancient Saturday morning market.

The market has come under the spotlight following comments at a recent council meeting, with fears that new byelaws may force its closure or curtailment.

But local Fianna Fail PRO Anthony Moore has come out in support of the market and wants its future confirmed.

‘I’ve been down with the people who use the market and they don’t want it closed. This is part of Drogheda and has been for centuries. We are pushing to be made a city and part of any city is a popular market, so we must do everything to keep it,’ he stated on Saturday as people arrived at the market to sign the petition.

‘We have to be expanding it and encouraging people to use it and trade here. There is a wonderful opportunity for people to start up here and I hope they take it.

‘At a time when it’s hard to find a place to rent, businesses can start small here,’ he added.

He says he’ll be in the market for the next few weeks with the petition and urges people to sign it.
