Desmond Matthews creates some history
At the annual conference of the Scottish Legal Managers’ and Inspectors’ Association, held recently in Scarborough, England, a Drogheda man was elected President and is the first Irishman to hold the post since the Association was founded in 1887.
He is Mr. Desmond Matthews, a native of the Crushrod Avenue area of Drogheda and he had occupied the post of vice-president for the past two years. Since 1960 he has been secretary of the Irish branch of the Association which was founded to promote the interest and welfare of its members who are, managers or inspectors of the Scottish Legal Life, Assurance Society.
Mr. Matthews started with the Scottish Legal as an agent in Drogheda in 1944 and in April, 1958 was promoted to the rank of inspector and transferred to the Dublin office.
